Karen Thompson

Karen-Thompson-2014AIn addition to her role as editor of the IAEM Bulletin, monthly newsletter of the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM), Karen manages IAEM online elections and provides staff support for the IAEM Awards program. Also, Karen manages website content for several other ASMI associations, including the National Association of State EMS Officials. She is proficient in newsletter writing, editing and production; website management; and committee/work group staffing and management. She is a graduate of Midwestern University with a B.A. in English and Journalism, and completed several graduate-level courses at Oklahoma State University in public administration. Karen served the State of Texas with Services to the Aged & Disabled from 1974-1989, the last 10 years as supervisor of staff in seven counties, providing Texas Medicaid Eligibility and Protective Services for the Aged & Disabled. Moving into the realm of technical writing in 1990, Karen held a position as senior technical writer for AmSouth Bancorporation. In 1995, Karen moved to the Washington, D.C. area, where she began working in the association management world. She was account manager in the public relations and marketing division of a large association management firm, where she worked with many of the 45 non-profit and trade associations managed in its Washington office. She served as editor of newsletters, magazines and journals for a variety of associations, including Lamaze International, the Museum Trustee Association, the National Association of Healthcare Access Management, the American Society for Bone & Mineral Research, and the American Society of Hematology. Karen is an active member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and publishes a newsletter for her neighborhood’s homeowners association. She is a member of the American Copy Editors Society. Karen began working with ASMI in 1999.
